as merth mentioned briefly above, then "gender binary" idea really does not translate to the real world. no matter how hard you look, i am doubtful that you will ever find a single psychological trait that is both present in every female and absent in every male, or vice versa. the physical differences between the two do lead to trends, but those trends are not absolute in the slightest. personally, i share many more traits that are traditionally "effeminate" than i do "masculine" (both in behaviour and in preferences). taking that possibility into account, it is possible for two given partners of the same sex to better represent a wide spectrum of ideals and behaviours than a given pair of opposite sexes, rendering the role model argument useless.
